6 Tips To Enjoy Ramen The Japanese Way!

Travelling is back in full swing – and isn’t it the favourite pastime of Singaporeans? If you’re planning to visit Japan in 2023 to indulge in a bowl of Ramen, here are some ramen etiquette that will help you enjoy your ramen down to the last slurp!

1. Slurping is encouraged

In Japan, it’s considered good manners to slurp your noodles. Not only does it show that you’re enjoying the dish, but it also helps cool down the noodles and bring out their flavour. So don’t be afraid to make some noise when eating your ramen!

2. Taste the broth first

Before adding any condiments to your ramen, taste the broth to appreciate the flavour of the soup base. If you like it as it is, you don’t need to add anything. However, if you want to adjust the flavour, feel free to add some chilli oil, vinegar, or other condiments provided at the table.

3. Don’t waste any soup

In Japan, it’s considered rude to waste food, including the broth in your ramen bowl. So try to finish all the soup, even if you don’t want to drink it straight from the bowl. Some restaurants provide a small dish for you to pour the remaining soup into and drink from.

5. Follow the local customs

Different regions of Japan have their own variations of ramen, and each has its own customs and traditions. Be observant of the locals and follow their lead.

6. Be mindful of others

When eating ramen in a crowded restaurant, be considerate of your neighbours. Don’t make too much noise or splash soup on other customers. Also, it’s common to queue outside the restaurant and wait for your turn. Be patient and avoid jumping the queue.
